Petrified Wood Cabochon 35ctWhen trees die or fall they are sometimes deposited into river beds or or floodplanes. Whilst some trees simply decompose others become buried in sediment and a huge amount of volcanic ash. The silica that was contained in the volcanic ash would have dissolved in the water and as it travelled down into the ground where the trees were buried it filled or replaced the cell walls and then crystalised. This stone is still currently being mined but it has been increasingly difficult to find the material containing the bluish/purple hues with the lovely black dendrites and so now if considered rare material

and is absolutely stunning

was discovered in 2008 and is considered to be the highest quality of opals found to date
