Christian Landenberger, Nude Study Of A ManThis nude study of a man by German artist, Christian Landenburger (1862 1927) is skilfully observed and rendered with a masterful touch. In 1920, when this was produced, Landenburger was employed as a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts, Stuttgart so we can assume that the drawing was probably undertaken there. Our eyes are guided initially by the tall tree on the left-hand side and then down along the riverbank - out towards the distant mill

I find the well in this painting quite intriguing and perhaps it had some historical significance

it’s plausible that the painting was initially intended as decoration - maybe even for a passenger ship

The portrait was previously hanging in a New Forest country house and it’s held within a fine maple frame

The portrait is housed within a beautiful gilded frame and signed/dated in the lower right

Note how the heavy clouds on the right are offset by the trees that lean to our left

He’s heading back home after a hard day on rough seas

Her left hand placed affectionately on the family dog
